The 3rd “wettest” winter on record in Wisconsin. More wintry precipitation expected by Friday night. Rain will change over to snow as temps fall. These are just some of the exhausting weather statements I have read recently. Starting a Wisconsin golf blog in January was a great idea…

Living in Wisconsin as a golfer is tough business. Our season comes to a close by early November without an end in sight until traditionally around early April. The Masters is usually enjoyed inside while frozen-like rain pours down my windows. How does a Wisconsin golfer manage this doldrum of a season??

Here are 4 tips to get you through the Wisconsin winter:

  1. Grab a putter. Short game is half our score, right? Try working on your stroke indoors during the winter months. Posture, feel, contact, consistency. All of these attributes will make you a better putter as soon as the grass grows. Who wouldn’t mind making a few more 10-footers?
  2. Enjoy YouTube. So much content, so little time. Tons of golf instruction videos but for me, I have been enjoying golf vlogs and trip content from No Laying Up and Erik Anders Lang. These videos remind me why I love the game and get me excited for launching this blog, Golf Wisely.
  3. Focus on strategy. On long dreary nights, I think about my favorite courses. I think through the round from the first tee through the last putt. Each hole can be played several different ways. What shot selection would I choose to shoot my best score? These thoughts can put your mind into a round and begin considering strategy instead of lifting the driver from the bag and smashing each tee shot every which direction. Think. Execute.
  4. Find the heat. This can go one of two ways. Either travel to warmer climates which is a great way to break up the long, cold season OR seek out a heated driving range. Both options allow you to groove your swing in preparations for migratory birds to come back to the state. The downside is hitting on mats which gives everyone a false sense of supreme ball striking ability. Reminder: you can’t chunk from a mat but you can on a wet, Springtime golf course.

LOTS more content coming your way via this blog, my Instagram page and eventually YouTube. I’ll be traveling the great state of Wisconsin reviewing the beautiful courses we have both well known and hidden gems. Follow me on Instagram to get updates on my latest posts.
