Trappers Turn, located in Wisconsin Dells, is adding to its already compelling 27-hole golf course. During my last round in October 2019, I noticed an advertising board in the pro shop announcing the Trappers Turn Short Course. Read this short blog post about these new short courses and what I expect from Trappers Turn.

What is a Short Course?

There is a recognized trend happening at destination golf courses. This trend includes the introduction of a fun, casual golfing experience with a shortened golf course. Holes are typically played with a handful of wedges and a putter and do not follow the traditional 18-hole setup.

The Sandbox – Rome, WI

Sand Valley‘s The Sandbox is a popular short course in Wisconsin and the greater golfer population, situated only 45 miles north of Trappers Turn. The Sandbox is a 17-hole course with holes ranging from 40-140 yards. Golfers seek out The Sandbox to experience either pre or post round while on-site playing one of Sand Valley’s courses; Sand Valley and Mammoth Dunes. The Sandbox is more than it appears on the scorecard with fun, undulating greens making the round an absolute thrill.

The Cradle – Pinehurst, NC

The Cradle at Pinehurst is another short course example. Again, The Cradle could be considered a “bonus” course for golfers visiting the Pinehurst golf complex offering exciting shots and fun greens. I have not played The Cradle (yet!) and cannot comment any more on the experience.

McMenamins-Edgefield Pub Course – Troutdale, OR

The Pub Course at Edgefield will not show up on a hard-core golfer’s must-see list, but I believe this short course hits the mark. Two distinct courses are on this property, which also includes restaurants, breweries and hotels, offer a 12-hole and 20-hole track. All types of golfers are welcome, even if you have never picked up a club. The Callaway Golf series, Golf Lives, did a short 5-minute segment on this course as well promoting inclusion for golf.

Vitense Golf Course – Madison, WI

Vitense golf course offers a bit more traditional setup with a 9-hole course with holes ranging from 90-150 yards. Golfers will bring a few more clubs to enjoy this course, but the expectations remain the same. Have fun! The course also hosts FootGolf for interested players. The Vitense property is located in central Madison, WI and includes lights to play at night!

What to Expect from Trappers Turn?

Wisconsin’s own, Andy North, is teaming up with Oliphant Golf to design and build 12 holes at Trappers Turn. Oliphant Golf is the same team responsible for renovating Lawsonia Links several years ago. The course will be built at the center of the property on some of the most interesting land featuring steep elevations and rock formations known only exclusively in the Wisconsin Dells area. I expect the views and golf shots to both be extraordinary.

Trappers Turn website states the 12-hole course will have yardages from 60-120 yards with the possibility to expand for better players. An early preview of the course is expected in fall of 2020 with a public opening in Summer 2021. The graphic below lays out the course routing. Knowing what I know about this patch of land, the Trappers Turn short course will be loads of fun!

I am very excited for this type of course to come to Trappers Turn. My recent review of the 27-hole course at Trappers Turn describes how it delivers an exceptional golf course at a good value. The addition of these 12 holes will only increase the appeal for the golf resort.

Ways to Enjoy The Trappers Turn Short Course

I believe the new short course will be a big draw for Trappers Turn morphing it into a true golf destination. It will add one more dimension to the golfing experience and invite players to extend their time on the property. Here are some ways I anticipate golfers to enjoy the course:

  • Play the course with some buddies (more than 4 hopefully) and a beer in hand after a round at Trappers Turn
  • Bring the family for some play after spending the day at the Wisconsin Dells water parks
  • Improve the wedge and short game and then head out for a quick 9 holes at either the Arbor, Canyon or Lake courses
  • Introduce a son, daughter or friend to the game on a fun and creative course

Finally, my biggest question is; what will Trappers Turn name the new golf course? I will update this blog in 2020 when the new name is announced, as well as pictures of the construction as it happens. I also hope to play a preview round!
