The Seamus Sunday golf bag has been my every day carry for a full season (2019) so it was time to update my review. A golf bag never used to be something I thought about. Hold 14 clubs, balls, tees and lots of miscellaneous items collected over the year(s). Check.
One of the biggest updates is how much this bag makes me want to walk a golf course. The influence has reached my golfing friends as well. We now enjoy golf in new ways…while on our feet. Much more can be said around the benefits of walking while playing golf, but I will save that for another blog post.
Seamus Golf, an Oregon-based company, is made up of golf enthusiasts, artisans and designers creating head covers and golf accessories. I stumbled across the Seamus brand last fall and was immediately blown away by the level of craftsmanship in all their goods. However, my intrigue immediately shifted towards the Fescue Project Sunday Bag.
After immersing myself in the walking culture, I was turned onto other carry bags including both Jones Sports Co and MacKenzie Golf Bags. These brands have their pros and cons, just like Seamus, but for me I love the character of my Fescue Project Sunday bag.
Sunday Bag Overview
As an update, I found no reason to switch out my Seamus bag throughout the year regardless of riding in a cart or preferably walking. The bag is capable of holding all 14 clubs which is my current setup. [UPDATE: I did not trim down my golf set as much as I expected. The bag easily carried all my clubs (except I did ditch my 4-iron) keeping the full set all year.] The opening is separated by two leather straps to give some space for your set. The single canvas strap offers a really nice balance and is more comfortable than you would expect – certainly good for 18 holes. [UPDATE: I found some extra padding on the strap to be necessary for an 18-hole walk. I purchased this seatbelt strap from Amazon.]
The Seamus Golf Sunday bag has 3 pockets which is ideal for the minimalist golfer. The reduced number of pockets forces me to only carry what is necessary and I love that about this bag. The pockets include;
- Leather side pouch – To carry a range finder and [UPDATE: Erin Hills Seamus Golf scorecard holder]
- Drawstring pouch – Designated for golf balls [UPDATE: I use a canvas pouch to store golf balls, tees and markers which easily stores in this pouch]
- Zipper pocket – To keep the smaller items like tees, ball markers and pencils [UPDATE: The zipper pocket is designated for my Sharpie, wallet, keys]
There is also a bungee/drawstring on the side of the bag for a jacket, Bluetooth speaker or an extra towel. [UPDATE: I used this drawstring to keep DSLR camera secure. Worked great!]
Quality
When you hold this bag, the quality truly comes through and Seamus’ passion for golf is obvious. From the stitching, fabrics, leather and construction I know this bag will be enjoyed for many years. [UPDATE: After 25-30 rounds, this bag has held up tremendously well. No signs of wear – only character to the leather.] The tweed is made from the famous Harris Tweed which only can be named Harris Tweed if made in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. The waxed canvas around the other side of the bag will prove invaluable when laying down on the morning grass. The bottom is covered in a branded Seamus Golf leather that will look better with age. [UPDATE: Several “wet” rounds from early morning golf where the waxed canvas held up incredibly well. Very impressed.]
There are nice touches throughout including Seamus’ tagline “Far & Sure” stamped on the leather pouch pocket. There is a small leather tag with ‘Seamus Golf Co’ which makes a terrific spot for a golf pencil. More leather on the handle made from a 1” strip sewn onto the bag securely as it will get a lot of wear and tear. [UPDATE: See above for padding added to the strap for comfort.]
This bag will fill anyone with pride as they pick it up and put it down throughout a round. Expect to be noticed carrying this brilliant bag. Also available in black cork, camo and Hawaiian. [UPDATE: This bag receives compliments every where I play. Recognized for its quality and character. Many believe it is decades old.]
Philosophy
In 2019, I am embracing the walk and intend to enjoy the game we all love just a little bit more. Looking back I know, and it angers me, that I have missed spectacular views, good conversation and physical activity all while cruising at 12 mph down the cart path. To make this change, I knew it needed to start with the bag I carry; a Sunday Bag.
The definition of a Sunday Bag is a smaller, lightweight alternative to the large bags typically seen on the back of golf carts or stand bags. Sunday bags will generally weigh about 2-3 lbs, provide a single strap and in many cases, only fit a subset of a golf set. The Seamus Sunday Bag delivers on these requirements and more.
When I first saw the Harris Tweed Fescue Project bag I knew it was the one for me. As an individual conscious of my style and the proud wearer of tweed sport coats, it was an immediate match. I signed up to be notified when a new batch was available and in November, 2018 I purchased the bag. My vision for 2019 was coming alive.
The Seamus Golf Fescue Project Sunday Bag makes walking an absolute joy. No longer will I blindly pay for a riding cart while my two legs are more than capable of taking me around the course. I will see things throughout my round typically missed while in a cart. Whether it be 9 holes or 18, the Seamus Sunday Bag delivers on my willingness to walk the course and change how I view the game.
Call to Action
No doubt a Seamus Golf bag is an investment piece. My hope is this Seamus Golf bag review provided insight into your upcoming purchase. I chose Seamus as I felt a connection to the brand and what they stood for. Whatever your bag of choice, I recommend you select an option which embraces walking. Slow the game down. Enjoy the walk. Golf Wisely.
